Association of Tunisian Journalists (AJT)
Created on March 22, 1972, the Association of Tunisian Journalists (AJT) works for the improvement of the quality of the press in Tunisia and for the promotion of freedom of information and of expression. The major concerns of this membership - association are :
- Defending freedom of the press.
- Defending media professionals
- Trade-union representation
- Promoting the ethics of the profession
- Training of journalists
The Association works in close cooperation with Tunisian and international organizations defending press freedoms.
In addition to its national executive board, elected every two years through a general congress, the association is represented in the regions and in press institutions by liaison committees.
An ordinary general assembly allows members, every 6 months, to assess the work of the executive board and to discuss questions of common concern, and future actions.
The Association is a founding member of the League of Maghreb Journalists, the Union of African Journalists, and the Union of Arab Journalists where it has held, on several occasions, the position of vice-chairman. Currently, it holds the position of deputy secretary-general of the Union of Arab Journalists and chairman of the commission of freedoms in the Union of African Journalists.
The Association has also held the position of vice-president of the Windhoek conference (May 1991) which gave birth to the Press Freedom Day on May 3 of each year.
The Association publishes each year a national report on the state of the press in Tunisia.
